Ultimate Lightroom: Selection Masks Explained

Learn how to make selection masks in Lightroom Classic and get better photos as a result

Selection masks are a key component of any competent post-processing workflow. They allow you to adjust specific portions of your photographs, like subjects, objects, and backgrounds. Even small adjustments can be powerful when applied correctly.

When a mask is sloppy, it can lead to halos and other edge artifacts. What I’ll show you in this class is how to harness the power of Lightroom’s masking tools to get perfect masks in just a couple of clicks.

Topics include:

  • Brush tool

  • Gradient tools

  • Range selections (color & luminance)

  • Content-based selections

    • Subject

    • Sky

    • Background

    • Landscape

    • People

From there, I’ll include:

  • Add/Subtract/Intersect

And finally, I’ll demonstrate some examples of these masks in action where I enhance images easily and quickly.
