The One Filter I Will Always Carry

A mandatory accessory for landscape photography

Greetings from Oregon! I took a little hike in the Columbia River Gorge to photograph Latourell Falls, one of my favorite spots. I thought I’d show you why a polarizer is practically mandatory for photography in forests or around water.

With polarizer:

Now you can see why this filter is so essential for certain kinds of landscape work. Without it, the foliage looks almost gray, and the glare on the stream is distracting. This sort of effect isn’t something you can replicate in post, so it’s why the polarizer is the one filter you really need if you do any kind of landscape photography.
