I’m getting ready to head out to San Diego, CA for back to back bird photography workshops. That means it’s time for me to start packing. With the myriad of gear and accessories photographers use, it can be easy to forget what to bring. My solution is to make a checklist!
Here’s a summary of things you should do before you arrive for a photo safari:
Charge all your camera batteries. I recommend having 3 on hand. 1 in the camera, 1 in your pack, and 1 that can be charging while you’re out shooting
Format all of your memory cards. Keep your cards in a memory card wallet when possible. Do not erase memory cards during the trip; this is your backup
Check for firmware updates for your camera (and lenses) and make sure everything is up to date
Check for software updates for your photo editing tools, especially if you use a separate laptop computer. Hotel WiFi can be quite slow if you need to update or install software
Download trial software: If you want to evaluate software during the trip, most developers offer free trial versions
Chargers and cables: make sure you pack enough to charge all your electronics, including your phone and laptop
Accessories to consider
Microfiber cloths
Gaffer’s tape
Blower bulb
Memory card reader for your computer
Tripod tools/hex wrenches for tripod mounting plates & L-brackets
Filters (if needed)
