Friday Postcard: Yellow-Headed Caracara
Just one of the amazing species found in the tropical rainforests of Central America
Happy Friday, friends! Today’s postcard comes from the Gamboa region of Panamá, where I took a boat tour on Gatún Lake with my safari clients. This is a yellow-headed caracara (Daptrius chimachima), a bird of prey in the falcon family found mainly in South America and Panamá. It’s typically a scavenger, and mostly forages on the ground while walking.
Gatún Lake is the central part of the Panama Canal complex, and was created in 1913 by dams. The majority of the canal is this lake, and was not actually dug. The lake is home to many bird and mammal species, including three different species of monkeys. It’s a fun excursion to take if you’re ever in Panama City!
