Friday Postcard: Greetings from Cottonwood, SD
A ghost town just off the beaten path in rural South Dakota was the perfect subject for infrared photography
Happy Friday, and thanks for being a subscriber! Today’s photo comes from rural South Dakota, where I led a photography workshop in 2024. If the image looks a little strange, that’s because I used a modified camera to capture the image in the near- infrared spectrum instead of the visible one.
Infrared photography has been around for a long time, but the techniques and materials needed to do it with film were extremely challenging. The film itself was heat-sensitive, and you had to load the camera in complete darkness. Now, you can simply send a camera in for an infrared conversion and easily start exploring this unique form of photography.
